Building microservices based (SOA) Payments system from scratch can be pretty straightforward. However, re-architecturing a new system while having a monolithic Ruby on Rails is far from simple! Challenges like how to ensure feature parity between 2 systems, how to run the monolithic application in parallel with the new system, and how to ensure production incidents don’t slow down feature development velocity are just to name a few. In this talk we will share how we successfully tackled these challenges and the important lessons we learned along the way.
At Airbnb it is essential for us to seamlessly move money between guests and hosts around the world, while also unlocking new financial services on our platform. Integrated with more than 15 Payment partners, we are responsible for building a centralized and unified gateway for all payment processing needs. In this talk we will give an overview of how our online and offline processing architecture works, how we drive optimization efforts, and how we make our gateway reliable and extensible.
After hearing how we process payments to ensure the success of each trip, we will then discuss how we validate these MONEY MOVES. Payment Reconciliation is a system built to monitor and oversee Airbnb's payment flow, end-to-end. In this talk we will give an overview of Payment Reconciliation, our development strategy, the key metrics for reconciliation, and its contribution to our SOA migration.
As we expanded our trip offerings to include more than just Homes, we developed specialized flows so that guests could successfully pay for new products on the platform. However, because of these custom payment solutions it became increasingly difficult to quickly build checkout flows that matched the needs of each new product. In this talk we will share how we created a series of services and frontend libraries to unify our checkout experience, and how that took payment integration times from a month to a few days!
At Airbnb we view our Hosts as thriving entrepreneurs, and are extremely passionate about providing tools and resources that help them grow their business. Host Advance is one example of how we do this. By partnering with funding providers to ensure flexible funding for Hosts, Host Advance makes it easier for Hosts to invest in their home and ultimately their business. Unlike the traditional loans that requires fixed monthly repayment, Host Advance allows Hosts to repay their balance through a fixed percentage of each Airbnb hosting payout. In this talk we will give an overview of how the program works, the challenges we encounter, and the potential impact it can have on our growing host community.
